Anyone Know What To Do With This?

This is a picture of the spot Chris is working on for our very first garden since we've been married. We both had gardens when we were children but that was a loooooooong time ago.

I really would love if you gardener's could give me an idea of what we're supposed to do know, what to plant next to each other and any other wonderful tips you have.

Here is a list of things we want to plant:

PEPPERS, PEPPERS & more PEPPERS

Carrots

Sweet Corn

Cucumbers

Onion's

Pumpkins

Tomatoe's

Sunflowers and some other flowers

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

PS How do you keep the bunnies out? We have bunnies living in our yard.

Sarah,
You will all love having a garden - it's like a lovely produce department in your own yard! :) There is such pleasure in knowing where your food has come from...your kiddos will love gathering veggies! We got started gardening in a small space with the book "Square Foot Gardening." It has great ideas about growing "vine-like" things (melons, cucumbers, grean beans,etc...) vertically - takes up much less space and is much easier to harvest from. Just an idea. :) We plant our sunflowers in a circle each year - our boys love to pretend it's their "club." Happy Gardening!

I am NOT a garden pro - I've only kept one for two years now. The first thing to do if you have rabbits is to put up a fence. Hopefully I'll put a picture up of ours soon - we're crossing our fingers because EVERYTHING was eaten last year by the rabbits. We bought a plastic chicken wire type fencing, and instead of burying it in the ground we flared it out on the bottom about a foot, and then staked it down. This year we're trying corn, and then doing tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, green beans, cucumbers and onions, as well as basil and oregano. I found a book about gardening in our state specifically month by month and it has helped some. Honestly, the first year I just bought things to transplant from the garden store, and this year I've backed it up and started from seeds so I have a bunch to transplant. If you go off my main blog I have a simplydawson blog and that is where I hide my closet gardening tactics.

I can help! We have a home garden and grow a lot of veggies and herbs. First - check out square foot gardening. You can fit more food in less space (which means fewer weeds, hooray!). Sunflowers need to be planted so that they don't shade the entire garden. Just watch your sun for a few days and you'll figure out what side to plant those on.

Plant your peppers near your tomatoes. Basil grows well with tomatoes too. Tomatoes grow tall so think about where their shadow will fall. You don't want a sun loving plant behind them in the shade. Think about growing your cucs on a tomatoe cage. They grow nicely UP things, take up less space, and you won't end up with a lost cucumber that weighs 10lbs.

Marigold has an offensive odor for insects, so plant them throughout your garden. Mint does the same thing but you should only grow them in a container. Mint is very invasive and will take over your garden if you're not careful otherwise. We use mint everyday when I brew tea so the insect repellent is a bonus :-)

I think squash and pumpkins grow well with onions.

Good luck!
